Love is important for family

QUESTION 22: ‘Love is important in a family’ How is this shown in novel you have read?

The novel that I have studied is ‘The Pearl’ written by John Steinbeck. From this novel, I learnt that love is important in a family.The character who portrays love for the family are Kino and Juana.

Kino shows his love when he considers giving himself up to the trackers because there is no way that he and his family can get away from them.When they are trying to escape from trackersm he is constantly concern about Juana and Coyotito’s safety. He told Juana ‘Perhaps, I should let them take me..(page 72) .He is willing to be captured so as to protect his family.The thought momentarily defeats him, until Juana reminds him that the trackers will kill her and Coyotito as well, and that prods Kino into action.

Besides that, Juana as the wife of Kino also show her loving and caring attitude towards her family. She prepare Kino’s breakfast for him while Kino sit outside the brush house, and she attends to Coyotito’s needs at the same time. Juana showing her deep love for baby, insists on getting the doctor for Coyotito despite knowing the doctor will refuse to treat her son. When Coyotito is stung by the scorpion, she instinctively ‘put her lips down over the puncture and sucked’. She don’t care whether she will be infected by the poison. She just want save her son. Juana placed a damp poultice made from seaweed on Coyotito wound .

In addition, Juana also shows her love to her husband, a simple fisherman, Kino and she never complain about her lowly state.While Kino is still blinded by the promises of the pearl. Juana knows the pearl wil bring bad luck to her family. So, Juana innate perception lead her to destroy the pearl without Kino knowledge. Juana had try to throw the pearl into sea but Kino caught her. Kino hits her face and kicks her in the side but ‘she just stared at him with wide unfrightened eyes, like a sheep befpre butcher’. She accept his beating as proper. Though her action proves fultile and she is badly hitten by Kino , this goes to show that she is willilng to act upon her given sensor for the sake of family.

As a conclusion, love is important for a family. Even Juana feels sad for what had happened to her son, Coyotito who is killed by a tracker, she still stand by her husband.
